According to a recent survey of financial services carried out by Ernst & Young, as soon as 2002, 14 p.c. of total technology spend will be on electronic commerce. 58 p.c. stated that PC-internet will be the most important area of technology spending, against 1 p.c. for ATMs and 13 p.c. for telephone service centres. Finance asked four banks in Ireland to profile the key person involved with their e-commerce strategy

Career: He has 22 years banking experience across AIB's retail, corporate & international businesses, most recently as a manager within the Bank's Strategic Development Unit - Business Sector. He was appointed AIB's EMU programme manager for the business sector in early 1997 and, in the two years preceding the commencement of EMU, he presented at over 250 seminars to 30,000 Irish business owners and managers on the impacts of the euro. He delivered one of the first fully functional euro calculators to be made available over the internet, and to date, nearly 1m copies of AIB's Simple Guides to the Euro have been distributed to SME's across the country. He was appointed to AIB's Electronic Banking Team in May 1999 to head up the Internet Marketing Team.

Projects: He is currently immersed in the promotion of use of AIB's 24hour-online internet banking service. By the end of this year, he expects the number of personal customers registered for the service will have doubled over his initial 7 months in his new role.

Publications: AIB's new 'Banking at your Fingertips' publication, which is in effect a simple guide to the internet and how to use it as a convenient and cost effective way of conducting routine banking business, is one of his more public and recent initiatives.

Projects: He is also spearheading the development of the infrastructure upon which the service is delivered to provide specific and tailored e-commerce services to business and personal customer sets.
