International brokers with an Irish presence performed well in this year’s survey. Collins Stewart, Smith Barney Citigroup, and Merrill Lynch, all featured strongly, indicating that the delivery of a local sales service certainly pays off. |
It is all change in the international firm ratings section in 2004, which is restricted to survey participants based in Ireland. Last year's dominant force, Deutsche Bank, was soundly beaten by its rivals this year when it came to services offered to Irish fund mangers, losing ground across the board.

However, no new force emerged to replace it, with firms instead showing individual strengths in key sectors. In the ‘Best overall equity research UK’ section, Cazenove, which was taken over by JP Morgan this year, topped the poll, jumping from seventh place last year. On the way up, it passed last year’s winner, Deutsche Bank, which slid to number six. ABN AMRO rose from fifth to second place, while UBS Warburg maintained its position at number three.
In the key research category of ‘Best overall equity research Europe’, UBS Warburg toppled Deutsche Bank to take top spot, while the German finance house fell to third place. ABN AMRO continued its strong showing with another second placing.
In another key category, ‘Best overall equity research USA’, Lehman Brothers topped the table, after not registering among the top firms in 2003.
Last year’s winner, Prudential, fell to sixth, while second place UBS Warburg, climbed from fifth in 2003. Smith Barney Citigroup won ‘Best overall equity research Japan’ for the second year in a row. HSBC came second, up from fifth last year. In the ‘Best overall equity research South East Asia’ category, Smith Barney Citigroup held on to the top spot for a second year, while ING moved up to second place. |
