In it for the long haul Back
Early advice given to Jonny Quigley back in 1991, to ‘find a good firm to work for, put your head down, work hard, be patient, and if you are talented enough you will get noticed and opportunities will come along’ has seen him rise through the ranks to his present role as senior vice president, sales & business development at Northern Trust, Dublin.
What is your educational background?

I am an accounting technician.

What has been your career path to date?

My career in Financial Services began in 1987 when I started work as a branch clerk for the Irish Permanent Building Society (IPBS) in Dublin. I briefly left the IPBS in 1990 to spend some time working in France but rejoined after six months and remained with the IPBS until late1991. In November 1991, I joined International Fund Managers (Ireland) Limited, which has subsequently been acquired by Northern Trust. I worked in the valuations and fund accounts area for seven years, with responsibility for valuing complex fund structures. I then moved into the area of business development and relationship management, and am now responsible for the sales and business development activities of Northern Trust in Ireland.

Are your peers from similar backgrounds?

Yes, many of my peers are from a similar background.

Have you worked abroad? If so where and what did you do? Would you do so again?

Much of my work is abroad, in Europe, Asia and the US, although I have always been based in Dublin.

How would you compare career prospects internationally to those in Ireland?

There are many opportunities in the fund administration and custody sector here in Ireland. I think that Ireland has probably the best career prospects in this sector, and as a result we are seeing an increasing number of people returning from London and the USA to fill positions in Irish operations.

Have you undertaken any additional professional training since assuming your current role?

Yes, there are numerous professional courses that I have attended since my time in the industry and Northern Trust strongly encourages personal development.

What skills/aptitude would you identify as being key/beneficial to a career in your sector?

A good solid accounting background will always be an advantage in the fund administration sector, and also the ability to get on with people is a huge benefit in any business.

What aspects of the job do you like most?

The variety in the job is what is most appealing - no two days are the same.

What aspects of the job do you like least?

Probably the amount of emails that I receive each day!

How do you define success in your sector?

The only measure for success is profitability.
Is there anyone in particular you admire in your industry? There are a number of people who I have a great deal of respect for but no one in particular stands out.

What advice would you give to others who might like a career in your sector?

I was given a very good piece of advice in 1991, which was to find a good firm to work for, put your head down, work hard, be patient, and if you are talented enough you will get noticed and opportunities will come along.

In what areas are there the most opportunities in Ireland? IFSC/domestic etc.

There are a lot of opportunities in the fund administration sector, which while is perhaps perceived as a less glamorous side of financial services, has many good career prospects for talented people.
