‘We have a lot in common in terms of what we do,’ Internal Markets Commissioner Charlie McCreevy told attendees at the Irish Association of Corporate Treasurers’ (IACT) annual dinner on September 29th, adding, ‘I gamble on horses. You gamble on markets. As Europe’s Internal Markets Commissioner I have responsibility for regulating both gambling and markets. But in much of Europe there are no black tie dinners for gamblers!!’ | IACT |
In his speech McCreevy referred to the creation of a Single European Payments Area. He said, ‘I will continue to listen carefully to the industry’s views on many aspects of this. It is an important piece of the remaining pieces of the jigsaw that must be put in place to create a properly integrated market. No doubt many of you are looking at the implications it may have for consolidation of corporate treasury functions. I am confident that the measure will be seen as one that offers more opportunities than threats for those who seek out first mover advantages’.
The dinner, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the IACT, was held in the Berkeley Hotel, and was attended by almost 300 guests. |
