Demand for accountancy professionals is greatest Back
Within the financial services sector and particularly within the IFSC, the demand for traditional accounting and the more specialised finance staff, outstrips every other segment of the employment market, write Brian Fowler and Anne Quinn.
With the steady growth of the financial services sector over the last 15 years, Ireland has been exceptionally successful in attracting global financial services companies to its market. In turn this has had a very positive affect on the Irish economy and employment within this sector grew by over eight per cent in 2005, giving a figure of approximately 19,000 by the end of the year. The main areas of growth can be seen in banking, funds and insurance.

This trend has continued through 2006 especially within the funds industry. Companies such as Bank of Ireland Securities Services, JP Morgan and Bisys are expanding their Dublin operations and this offers exciting new opportunities for both experienced funds individuals and graduates within the city. The financial services industry is expanding outside Dublin, and a number of top companies have also set up regional operations in areas such as Wexford, Cork and Kilkenny.

As a result of the increase of new opportunities in the market, a main concern for employers is the retention of existing staff. This is reflected in that we can see that employers are trying to promote internally as often as possible, offering excellent career progression to employees. With internal promotion increasing, many vacancies now exist at entry to officer level with 1-2 years experience, and at senior management level where experience is required from outside.

With so many excellent career opportunities candidates can afford to be selective in their job search. We are finding that most candidates are quite discerning when making a career move and salary in a lot of cases is not always the driving factor.

We expect that growth within the financial services sector will continue at least through to the end of 2007 with the demand for candidates outweighing supply. This growth has had a very positive effect on our business and our banking and finance division is growing at a phenomenal rate. Within the financial services sector and particularly within the IFSC, the demand for traditional accounting and the more specialised finance staff, outstrips every other segment of the employment market.
