IBI tops 2005 deal league table Back
IBI leads by volume of deals, but Goodbody leads on deal value, according to the latest statistics on the industry.
IBI Corporate Finance leads the way in advising corporate finance deals in Ireland in the first three quarters of 2005, according to league tables produced by Mergermarket. IBI, which last year advised on the second highest number of deals, takes the top spot on the table with eight deals. As was the case last year, accountancy firms performed particularly well, advising on a high number of transactions, but of a low value. In second place is PricewaterhouseCoopers with seven deals, and in joint third are Deloitte and KPMG with five.

However, when looked at by value, UK based investment banks dominate the table, with Goldman Sachs topping the table with a total deal value of €3,059 million, followed by Deutsche Bank with €3,020 million. With a deal value of €337 million, IBI comes in seventh position, over-taken by both Goodbody Stockbrokers, which is the highest ranked Irish firm at number five with a deal value of €540 million, and AIB Corporate Finance, in sixth place with a deal value of €458 million.

Overall in Europe, M&A activity in terms of value has risen from the fourth quarter of 2004 when it was under €200 billion to rise to close to €250 billion at the third quarter of 2005, but in terms of volume of deals there has been a fall from close to 1,400 deals to nearly 1,000.

Some of the deals IBI worked on this year include Bank of Ireland’s disposal of the Bristol & West retail branch network in the UK to the Britannia Building Society, and the €29.5 million disposal by Sigma Communications Group of Sigma Wireless Technologies to US based PCTEL Inc.
