As chief executive of Eagle Star Life Assurance Company of Ireland Limited, which has recently been designated as an EU-wide risk carrier by its parent Zurich Financial Services, Michael Brennan's key responsibilities lie in managing the company's life, pensions and investment businesses.

Current responsibilities: Responsible for Eagle Star’s Life, Pensions and Investment business and managing these businesses in the interests of customers, shareholders and staff. Also a member of Zurich Financial Services Global Life Executive

Career progress:Joined Irish Life in 1973 where he qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1976. In 1977 joined Shield Life as Company Actuary and was involved in the groundwork prior to Shield Life’s launch to the market in 1978. Subsequently added a number of other senior management responsibilities. In 1986 took over as CEO of the business and was also appointed to the Board. In 1990 he led the corporate identity change to ‘Eagle Star’ and in the same year was appointed a divisional director on the Board of Eagle Star’s International Division in addition to his responsibilities in Ireland. Also a Director of Eagle Star’s general business. In 2004 he was appointed to Zurich Financial Services Global Life Executive. Past President of the Irish Insurance Federation and a member of the Executive Committee of Financial Services Ireland and is now the longest serving CEO of and Insurance Company in Ireland.
Special projects: In 2000 Eagle Star became a founding member of Business in the Community. Personally drove the publication of a Corporate Responsibility Report by Eagle Star Life making it the first Financial Services Company in Ireland to publish such a report. Sponsored a successful migration of Eagle Star Life’s IT systems ahead of Y2K and Eagle Star Life has now established a clear lead in IT and providing online information for intermediaries and customers.
Awards: Led Eagle Star focus on service and investment performance resulting in first place in industry Service Excellence Awards in 10 out of the last 15 years.
