Educational PPPs blaze the trail Back
The Department of Education is leading the way on PPPs as it finalises partnership arrangements for the design, construction, financing and operation of three new post-primary schools.
The three schools, all on state-owned sites outside Dublin, will be treated as a bundled PPP project which is expected to attract tenders within the next two to three months. According to a Department of Education spokesperson, there has already been ‘enormous interest’ in the project. Actual on-site construction is expected to begin in around a year from now.

Meanwhile, third level educational facilities are also getting in on the PPP act. In mid-September, an IBEC-sponsored seminar was held in Tullamore, during which institutes of technology, teacher training colleges and universities were briefed on the PPP process. At the meeting, the participating third level colleges were invited to research possible projects within their own institutions which might benefit from PPPs and to report back to the Department of Education on this within a few months. The emphasis is on educational facilities, such as libraries of laboratories, says the Department.
