Adrian Burke was elected the new president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) in Ireland at the institute’s annual general meeting. Speaking at the AGM, Burke outlined his belief in the benefits of self-regulation by professional bodies. ‘There are significant benefits to the public from having self-regulation. The regulatory work is done by professionals who understand the work involved, the standards necessary and are in a better position to identify poor work… Legislation which will hopefully be enacted later this year will establish a statutory body to supervise self-regulation of the accountancy profession and provide the accountancy bodies with additional powers to carry out their functions.’
Burke replaces outgoing president Henry Saville. Burke is a former managing partner of Arthur Andersen and holds a number of non-executive directorships including AIB and Coyle Hamilton. The ICAI AGM also elected James Hunt, partner with Chantrey Vellacot DFK, Belfast as deputy president and Terence O’Rourke, partner with KPMG, Dublin as vice president. |
