| After a particularly strong performance in this section in last year’s survey, Goodbody must share the spoils with Davy, with five titles apiece. Elsewhere Merrion’s Robert Brisbourne polled well to knock stalwart John O’Reilly of Davy from the top of the foods category, with his colleague John Mattimoe also winning a title. |
It’s even stevens for both Goodbody and Davy in the ‘Best Equity Analyst’ section of this year’s survey, with both firms garnering five awards each. This is a good improvement for Davy on its performance last year, when it took just three titles. Merrion has had a good year, taking two titles in this section.
Equity strategist
Robbie Kelleher of Davy has retained his title of ‘Best Equity Strategist’ in this year’s survey, a title he has won seven times since the survey began back in 1987.
In Colin Hunt’s absence, Goodbody’s Liam Igoe has jumped into second place, followed by Adrian O’Carroll of Merrion, who didn’t make the short-list last year.
NCB’s Bernard McAlinden, who won the title in 2003, has improved on his placing of fifth last year, by coming in fourth this year.
Collins Stewart has made an impression on this section of the survey, with Chris Johns following behind McAlinden.
Financials
With last year’s ‘Best Financials Analyst’ Seamus Murphy having left Merrion to move into sales with Davy, last year’s second runner-up Eamonn Hughes of Goodbody has jumped up to take the title in this year’s survey, beating off competition from Davy’s Emer Lang and Scott Rankin.
Before Murphy started dominated this category, Hughes was the front-runner, having won the award in 1999, 2000 and 2001, when he was with ABN AMRO.
Food & Beverages/Agribusiness
In one of the biggest surprises in this year’s survey, Davy’s John O’Reilly has been toppled from the top of the ‘Best Food & Beverages/Agribusiness Analyst’ heap, with Merrion’s Robert Brisbourne scooping the award for the first time.
In a closely fought contest, Brisbourne beat off the advances of Goodbody’s Liam Igoe, who won the award in 1999, 2000 and 2001, who is in second place, and Davy’s O’Reilly, who has dominated this category, winning it a total of 11 times.
Small & Mid-Cap
In a first for Merrion in this category, John Mattimoe has won the title of ‘Best Small & Mid Cap Stocks Analyst’. Mattimoe, who came close for the past number of years when he placed third last year, and second in 2003, took the title from Neil Clifford of Goodbody, who falls back to second place.
There is no change for third and fourth place, with three-times winner John Sheehan of NCB holding onto third place, and Florence O’Donoghue of Davy, bringing up the rear in fourth.
Pharma & Biotech
Goodbody’s Ian Hunter, who has dominated this category for the past two years, has been knocked off the top spot by Davy’s Jack Gorman, relegating Hunter to second place. NCB’s Orla Hatford has had a good year, as she jumps from sixth place last year to third this year.
Technology
Another Goodbody analyst has been toppled from the top in this category, with Gerry Hennigan forced into second place by a great performance by Davy’s Barry Dixon, who has been runner-up for the past number of years, but who took the title in 2002.
There is a reversal of places in third and fourth with Merrion’s Brid White winning out over Tricia McEvoy of NCB.
Airlines
Holding onto the title of ‘Best Airlines Analyst’, which he first won in 2003 is Joe Gill of Goodbody. The winner in 2002 and last year’s second runner-up Stephen Furlong of Davy is this year’s runner-up, while Merrion’s John Mattimore falls back to third place, followed by NCB’s Shane Matthews.
Media
Neil Clifford holds onto his title of ‘Best Media Analyst’ in this year’s survey, followed by Joe Burnell of Davy, and Brid White of Merrion. NCB’s Shane Matthews falls back one place to fourth.
Construction & Building Materials
Winner of the ‘Analyst of the Year’ award in 2003, Robert Eason of Goodbody, wins the ‘Best Construction & Building Materials Analyst’ again in this year’s survey, having also taken the title in 2003 and 2004. Elsewhere there is no change, with Merrion’s John Mattimoe holding onto second place, NCB’s John Sheehan in third, and Davy’s Joe Burnell in fourth.
Telecoms
In what is his second category win, Neil Clifford of Goodbody has also won the ‘Best Telecoms Analyst’ category, adding to his other win ‘Best Media Analyst’.
Jack Gorman of Davy holds onto the runner-up position, with Brid White of Merrion and Tricia McEvoy of NCB swapping positions this year.
Hotels & Leisure
In his second win in this year’s survey, Davy’s Barry Dixon has won this award from Goodbody’s Neil Clifford, having been runner-up last year. Clifford has fallen back to third place this year, with another Davy analyst, David Jennings moving into second place.
Best Energy & Resources
Holding onto his title in this year’s survey is Davy’s Job Langbroek, who formerly dominated this category from 1988 to 1992. Goodbody’s Gerry Hennigan holds onto his second place, with NCB’s Peter Hutton moving into third place. |
