Davy is still ahead of the pack, but Goodbody scoops award for best research back
Davy Stockbrokers has once again out-performed all other stockbroking firms, in this year’s annual FINANCE Stockbroking Survey 2005, in which over 1,000 fund managers, both domestic and international, were polled. However, as in 2003, Goodbody Stockbrokers has also come away with one of the top titles, ‘Best Irish Equity Research Overall’, in a year in which Merrion Capital also polled very strongly, taking the ‘Research Report of the Year’ award, and NCB Stockbrokers positioned well in a number of key categories. Both Bloxham Stockbrokers and newcomer Collins Stewart made their presence felt in this year’s survey, with Bloxham putting in a particularly strong performance in the bonds section.
In the overall firm categories Davy Stockbrokers has roared into pole position in this year’s survey, winning a total of six out of the 11 categories, including ‘Best Sales Trading Service/Execution/ Ability to Deal in Size’, ‘Best Sales Service’ and ‘Best Economic Research’.

However, with another strong performance in this year’s survey is Goodbody Stockbrokers, who have, for the second time since 2002, taken one of the main titles, ‘Best Irish Equity Research Overall’, pipping Davy to the post.

NCB has held onto its ‘Best International Equity Research (Excluding Irish Equities)’ title, beating off both Merrion and Davy, as well as winning a new category in this year’s survey, ‘Best Technical Analysis’. Merrion also performed well, winning an award for ‘Best for Objectivity of Equity Research’.

On the individual analyst front, Davy’s Robbie Kelleher was awarded both ‘Best Equity Strategist’ and ‘Best Research Economist’, the latter being the first time he has taken that title.

Robert Eason of Goodbody was accorded ‘Analyst of the Year’ for the second time, and he also won the ‘Best Construction & Building Materials Analyst’ award.

Merrion’s new parent Landsbanki should be pleased with its new acquisition’s performance in this year survey. Robert Brisboure narrowly missed out on being crowned ‘Analyst of the Year’, and was runner-up in this category. Elsewhere he was awarded ‘Best Food & Beverages/ Agribusiness Analyst’ beating long-time winner of that award John O’Reilly of Davy, and he also won the ‘Research Report of the Year’ award for his report on the food and drinks industry, ‘C&C Magners Survey’.

Elsewhere in research, Goodbody again won ‘Best Morning Research Notes’ for its ‘Goodbody Irish Equity Morning Meeting Wrap’, followed by Davy and Merrion, with Davy taking the title of Best Equity Books (printed or online), followed by Goodbody and NCB.

On the sales side, Merrion’s Adrian O’Carroll held onto his title of ‘Best Equity Sales Person’. In bonds, NCB’s Dermot O’Brien, won the ‘Best Research Economist’ title, followed by last year’s winner, Davy’s Donal O’Mahony, with AIB’s Oliver Mangan in third place.
