Governance transparency and accountability in investment funds
According to fund managers, there has been a significant increase in the number of clients demanding that environmental, ethical, social and governance (ESG) issues are incorporated into their investment decisions. These social and environmental corporate performance indicators were once considered periphery concerns for investors however there has been a significant shift in perspective according to 73% of managers surveyed in the recent Mercer Investment Consulting 2006 Fearless Forecast Survey. It is now believed that these ESG issues are set to become mainstream investment considerations within the next ten years, perhaps more strongly than the industry would have assumed, and managers need to be aware of this and ensure they can respond accordingly, writes Colette O'Beirne of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
